Our organization strives to nurture a relaxed training environment in which each club member is viewed as equal. There is no rigid hierarchy of command; our goal is to understand combat, and we welcome any of our members to share their knowledge and understanding regarding the martial arts in a respectful and humble manner.
The primary focus of our organization is the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) style of martial arts. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on ground fighting with the goal of gaining dominant positioning and/or a submission. It promotes the idea that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant. BJJ training is used for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.
IPFW Jiu-jitsu is affiliated with Total Jiu-jitsu of Warsaw, Indiana. Total Jiu-jitsu is the only academy in Indiana affiliated with the Royler Gracie - David Adiv Jiu-Jitsu Association (RGDA). Total Jiu-jitsu is run by Jason Fox, a black belt under Royler Gracie. All of the IPFW Jiu-jitsu club instructors, and competition team members train under Jason Fox. IPFW Jujitsu attempts to model our training structure after that of Total Jiu-jitsu.
The martial arts cannot be defined simply as a collection of combat skills. There are numerous aspects to the martial arts; many of them have nothing, or very little to do with combat. As an organization we endeavor to enhance our membership in all of these aspects of the martial arts. This includes healthy dietary habits, vice control/management, mental health techniques, physical conditioning, and even philosophical theory.
